The Folly of Not Trusting God

Scripture

Isaiah 31:1-3
Woe to those who go down to Egypt for help, and rely on horses, Who trust in chariots because they are many, And in horsemen because they are very strong, But who do not look to the Holy One of Israel… Now the Egyptians are men, and not God; And their horses are flesh, and not spirit. When the LORD stretches out His hand, both he who helps will fall, and he who is helped will fall down; They all will perish together.

Observation

Isaiah spoke these words during a time when Judah as a nation was threatened by the powerful Assyrian Empire. Faced with the possibility of invasion, Judah was tempted to look south to Egypt for military protection rather than depend on the LORD. Egypt had horses, chariots, and skilled horsemen, the kind of military strength that looked impressive and dependable when an enemy was approaching.

But through Isaiah, God exposed the deeper issue: “They do not look to the Holy One of Israel, nor seek the LORD” (Isaiah 31:1). The problem was not simply that Judah recognized Egypt’s military strength; it was that they were placing their confidence in human power instead of seeking and trusting God.

God then draws a striking contrast: “The Egyptians are men, and not God; and their horses are flesh, and not spirit” (Isaiah 31:3). Egypt may have looked powerful, but its strength was still human, temporary, and limited. Their horses could be strong, their chariots numerous, and their soldiers experienced, but none of them possessed the unlimited power of God.

Judah was looking at what was visible: horses, chariots, numbers, and military strength, while overlooking the invisible God who had repeatedly proven Himself faithful to His people.

The passage therefore raises a deeply personal question for us today:

Who or what am I trusting, to do for me what only God can do?

Application

A proud graduate of the University of Illinois with honors, surely my future was bright. And then came six months of unemployment, after a costly investment of my time, energy, and resources with no return. Six months earlier, I was praising God, only to find myself complaining and murmuring six months later. The truth is, I had placed my hope in my degree to provide for me instead of involving God and trusting Him with my future.

What do we do when we depend on someone or something and it fails us? Science, money, marriage? In Isaiah 31:1–3, God lovingly cautions Israel to put their trust in Him rather than in people or things. Living by faith is hard, but trusting in anything or anyone else is even harder and more uncertain. Through the prophet Isaiah, God reminds His people that relying on anything other than Him is risky. The Egyptians were strong men, and the horses were mighty, but they were not “spirit.” They were limited in power, limited in strength, and could provide only limited protection.

True peace, love, joy, provision, salvation, and everything else we need are found in none other than our Lord Jesus Christ. Some place their hope in wealth, but wealth can fail them in times of sickness. Some build their happiness around their spouse, only to feel hurt and betrayed when expectations are not met. In a fallen world, things are bound to fall apart, and if we do not place our trust and hope in Christ, we can easily be shaken in times of adversity.

But glory be to God that, as believers, we can choose to become unmovable and unshakeable despite life’s trials as we make God the foundation and pillar of our lives.

“On Christ the solid rock we stand, all other ground, all other ground, all other ground is sinking sand.”

Reflection Questions
  1. What is my “Egypt” right now, and where have I been looking for security? Is there a person, relationship, accomplishment, possession, or resource I may be trusting more than God?
  2. Am I involving God in my decisions and plans, or only turning to Him when my plans do not work out?
  3. What situation in my life feels uncertain right now, and what would it look like to turn to God, seek Him, and trust Him with it today?

Prayer

Father, help me to recognize the areas of my life where I have placed my trust in people, things, or my own abilities instead of You. Forgive me for the times I have looked elsewhere for what only You can provide.

Teach me to trust You even when I don’t understand what You are doing. Help me to remember that people and circumstances may change, but You remain faithful.

Lord, be the foundation of my life. May my hope, confidence, and security always be found in You.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
